The Roadhouse was a fantastic, sweaty underground (literally) club, 37 ft below the pavement on the corner of Newton St. and Back Piccadilly. A place where people came together to share music, whether it was one of its club nights (this was Electric Chair's home before it moved to The Music Box), or a ram-packed gig. The sound system was excellent - the bass bins coming from the Haçienda.
Originally a blues club, co-owners Steve Lloyd and Kate Mountain took it over in the mid 1990s and created something of a local legend.
Famously, three members of Elbow worked here, (Guy Garvey, Pete Turner and Richard Jupp) and there were many early Elbow gigs here. Around the same time bands such as Muse and Coldplay played here.
Sadly, in 2014 Steve Lloyd lost his battle against cancer. Steve was not only one of the owners of The Roadhouse, but also ran the studio complex and touring complex Noise Box, who worked with hundreds of local bands, offering rehearsal and studio space, as well as backline, PA and sound engineers. Elbow named their first record the Noise Box EP.
