Tony Wilson Place

Anthony Wilson. He Was So Manchester, they named an office block after him

Tony Wilson Place sits on First Street, opposite the Haçienda building and in another direction, the The Boardwalk.

Little Peter Street was also the site of the famous TJ Davidson's rehearsal rooms and studio complex (35 Little Peter Street), where loads of local punk and post-punk rehearsed, including Joy Division. Sadly demolished in the 1990s, the complex was the location of the Love Will Tear Us Apart video, as well as a lot of Kevin Cummins' great band photos.

In summer, relax in the square on free deckchairs, watch the big screen, and enjoy a drink from HOME, with occasional live music. Once an industrial area (now visible in the red brick archways on Hewitt Street), TWP is now a hub of glass-fronted buildings, restaurants, and bars in Manchester, and home to HOME, one of the city’s leading arts and culture destinations.

Few voices are as instantly recognisable in Manchester as that of Rowetta. With her powerful vocals and commanding stage presence, she became a defining figure of the city’s music scene, most famously as a key member of Happy Mondays during the height of the Madchester era.

More than just a singer, Rowetta embodies Manchester’s spirit, bold, resilient and unapologetically original, and remains a celebrated part of its cultural story.

Watch the video to hear more about the incredible singer and songwriter Rowetta, and her experiences performing at some of the iconic venues around Manchester.
